114,685 Whop products are free. That is 28.9% of the catalog, and it is the number most "is Whop free?" answers should start with. The rest of the page is what that 29% is for, and why it shows up as $0 in every revenue table we publish.

11.6% of paid listings earn anything. The 8.2% platform figure everyone quotes mixes in 114,685 free products that cannot earn in this model. If you are launching a paid product, 11.6% is the base rate, not 8.2%.

Our January free-tier guide counted 72,017 free products on ~183K visible listings (39%). The free count rose. The free share fell, because the paid catalog grew faster. We did not rewrite that guide; it is a January snapshot. This page is the August one.

Why free products show $0 revenue

Our estimate is built from public price and activity. A $0 price times any member count is $0. That is a model limit, not a finding that free products have no business value.

Free listings are the top of the funnel: Whop Clips at 1,038,297 members, Content Rewards at 442,896, Clipping Culture at 320,728. Those rooms exist so people join without a card. Paid upgrades, if they happen, show up on other routes.

Treat $0 estimated MRR on a free product as "we cannot see the upgrade," not as "this community is worthless."

⚠️

Five of those six are clipping or short-form content. That is why AI engines already land on our clipping guide and not on a generic "free Whop" page. We left that guide's title alone.

Six clipping-related industry tags cover 12,487 listings, 366 earners, and $1.35M estimated MRR. Huge free rooms, small paid outcomes. The January guide already said the top clipping product's revenue was modest next to trading. The member counts have only gotten larger.

All estimated platform MRR is on the paid side, by construction. Inside paid:

  • Median listed price: $39
  • Average listed price: $208
  • Median earner: $96/month
  • 32,691 of 282,775 paid listings (11.6%) show any estimated revenue
  • $500+ prices: 24,060 listings, $49.2M (55.8% of MRR)

The fees and prices page has the full price ladder. The What is Whop? page has the power-law chart.

Paid does not mean "will earn." 250,084 paid listings still show $0 estimated revenue. Price is necessary in our model. It is not sufficient in the market.

Should you launch free or paid?

1. Free if you need members before you need MRR

The largest rooms on Whop are free. Clipping used that path at a scale nothing else in the catalog matches.

2. Paid if you need the estimate to be able to move

A free listing cannot show revenue in this dataset. If your plan is "charge $39/month," you are in the median paid band, competing with 58,270 listings in $25–$50, of which 5,652 earn.

3. Do not quote 8.2% as your odds on a paid launch

Strip the free catalog out. 11.6% of paid listings earn. Still a minority. Still better than mixing in 115K products that cannot earn by definition.

Methodology

Free = renewal_price_cents = 0 and initial_price_cents = 0 on product_with_estimates. Paid = any positive price on either field. Revenue estimates multiply public price by activity, so free ⇒ $0 estimated MRR by definition. Member counts are per product and are not unique people. The January free-tier guide is a separate snapshot; numbers there are not updated in place. Clipping cluster filter: industry_type IN (video_clipping_agency, clipping_education, clipping_gig, clipping_community, clipping, clipping_agency).
